May Hot Topics

Well, well, well if it isn’t lovely May.

Spring has indeed sprung and if you’re in the midwest, that means the tornado watches and muggy mornings have arrived.

Each month, we review five things to consider for your month. Some are just for fun, most are for your financial success so grab your planner and let’s get started.

  1. May brings quite the activity list. I don’t know about you but it is one of those months that seems to fill up IMMEDIATELY. Kentucky Derby, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, tons of birthdays, Memorial Day, Indy 500, graduation. Why does this matter? It’s critical for you to block these on your calendar so that you can prepare for additional expenses that may come up. Parties, dinners, gifts, etc. No surprises when you plan ahead!

  2. Career tip: Rather than messaging people throughout the day with your questions (IM makes this way too easy these days), collect your questions and send them in one message/email. Or wait until your next 1:1 to address them all. This might help you get a better response from the person and it creates better dialogue. Plus, you won’t be seen as the annoying person constantly blowing up people’s IMs!

  3. Book recommendation: The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel

This book does a great job of layering facts with the deeper psychology of money behaviors. It’s a shorter read and quick chapters so you can break it down easily.

“His skill is investing. But his secret is time.

    That’s how compounding works.”

  4. Podcast recommendation: In keeping with the theme, if you’re going to read the book (or not) you should also check out an interview that Morgan did with the Him and Her podcast.

  5. Money mindset: Repeat after me, “I am worthy of all that I desire. There is an abundance of money. Money flows easily. I know how to hold onto my wealth. I make smart decisions with my finances.”

Quick money tip: set up alerts or notifications for your bank accounts so that you know when changes are happening in your account. This is super helpful when there’s a large purchase you forgot about, a discrepancy with a charge, an overdraft, or a refund. If you use a service like Rocket Money, they will send you an email or notification in the app with these types of changes.
